Legendary Games Workshop illustrator John Blanche passed away on June 1, 2026.
No one contributed more to the look and feel of GW’s original Warhammer world than John Blanche. He first became associated with GW as a White Dwarf cover artist in 1977. Blanche later moved on to illustrating the cover of the Warhammer Fantasy Battle (1983), and was a sculptor at for Brian Ansell’s Asgard Miniatures (see “Titan Passes Away“). When GW moved to Nottingham in the mid-80s, Blanche became GW’s art director.
Blanche stayed with GW for many years directing their in-house art department, producing designs for Citadel, and contributing to White Dwarf. He pioneered the grimdark art style that is used in so many of today’s miniature games and RPGs. In May 2023, he retired from Games Workshop. In 2024, The Army Painter began producing a series of paints and paint sets dedicated to his legacy in the miniatures world (see “Army Painter Boxed Sets“). ICv2 offers the family of John Blanche its sincere condolences.
