DC plans a number of special releases to commemorate comics writer, artist and teacher Joe Kubert around what would have been his 100th birthday. Kubert passed away in 2012 at the age of 85 (see “RIP Joe Kubert“).
DC Special #5 Facsimile Edition is a reprint of the 1969 comic that collected four of Kubert’s favorite stories, with a new commemorative cover by members of the Kubert family and alumni of the Kubert School, including Adam Kubert, Andy Kubert, Emma Kubert, Jan Duursema, Tom Mandrake, Ron Wagner, Amanda Conner, Rick Veitch, Stephen R. Bissette, Lee Weeks, Ron Randall, Steve Lieber, and colorist Brad Anderson. The comic will also have foil and blank sketch variant covers and will be released on September 16, 2026.
Joe Kubert: 100 Years – A Life in Covers is a one-shot comic collecting some of Kubert’s most notable covers, including some from The Brave and the Bold, House of Mystery, Sgt. Rock, and Ragman. Kubert’s granddaughter Katie Kubert, now a DC group editor, wrote the foreword. This comic will also be released on September 16.
Celebrating Sgt. Rock by Joe Kubert: Deluxe Edition is a 328-page hardcover collection of notable stories, in fully restored color, from G.I. Combat #68; Our Army at War #83, #91, #117, #135, #141, #158, #165, #196, #233, and #238; Sgt. Rock #302-304 and #368; Sgt. Rock Special #1; Joe Kubert Presents #5; and Showcase #45, as well as previously unpublished artwork and new forewords by artist Andy Kubert and writer Brian Azzarello. It will be released on September 15 with an MSRP of $49.99.
