Wizards of the Coast Designers Ban Eight 'Magic: The Gathering' Cards

One from the Legacy Format, One from the Pauper Format, and Six from the Brawl Format

Wizards of the Coast announced that eight cards have been banned, across different formats, via the Magic: The Gathering Banned and Restricted Announcement made on June 29, 2026.

In the Legacy format, Candelabra of Tawnos was banned. This card had been banned before in Legacy (back when it was called “Type 1.5”), but was unbanned in 1999 after the Tolarian Academy was banned in the format; for many years it was a staple card in the High Tide deck. Now, the infamous candlestick is back on the banned list because it made newer versions of the Colorless Tron deck a little too powerful. The value of the Candelabra of Tawnos, a reserved list card (see “‘Magic’ Reserved List“), had risen considerably since its inclusion in the Tron deck, going from roughly $1,000 in the beginning of 2025 to over $3,500 in mid-2026.

In the Pauper format, Seeker of Skybreak was banned. It was banned because of a new combo that involves Seeker of Skybreak and Hawkeye’s Bow, which ends games quickly.

In the Brawl format, Force of Will, Subtlety, Wash Away, Ugin’s Labyrinth, Time Warp, and Temporal Manipulation are banned. These cards were all banned because WotC designers were looking to shift the format to a more casual style of play, as Competitive Brawl is now available to play. This format is mostly an online one, so this will have little impact on card prices (if any).
