Comic artist and writer Sam Kieth passed away on Sunday, March 15, after suffering from Lewy Body Dementia for several years, according to a social media post on behalf of his family by Scott Dunbier. He was 63.
Kieth was best known for his work on the launch of the new Sandman with Neil Gaiman for Vertigo in 1989 (he penciled the first five issues), and his own series The Maxx for Image, scripted by William Messner-Loebs, which launched in 1993.
Kieth’s first comic work was for indie publisher Comico in the mid-80s, where he was the inker of Matt Wagner’s Mage, and of Fish Police. He did a fair amount of work for Marvel and DC over the years, including issues of Incredible Hulk, Marvel Comics Presents, Batman: Secrets, and the Batman/The Maxx: Arkham Dreams, his last published work. He also did work published by Wildstorm, Oni, and Aftershock (see “Layman and Kieth Team”).
Our condolences to Kieth’s family and friends.
