Free Comic Book Day Acquired

The fate of Free Comic Book Day, the pre-eminent annual promotional event for comic stores, has been resolved through its acquisition from Sparkle Pop LLC by Universal Distribution, the companies announced.  The future for the event had been in limbo since the bankruptcy filing by Diamond Comic Distributors and the acquisition of its comic-related assets by Ad Populum company Sparkle Pop.

Canadian comic and game distributor Universal Distribution acquired Alliance Game Distributors, the game distribution asset of Diamond, and is planning an expansion of its U.S. business into the comic category (see “ICv2 Interview: Universal CEO Angelo Exarhakos“).

The acquisition of Free Comic Book Day positions Universal with an important asset at the center of efforts to grow the comic and graphic novel business worldwide.  The event, held the first weekend of May each year, is typically one of the biggest days of the year in the more than 2000 participating comic stores.

“Free Comic Book Day is a beloved tradition in the comics world,” Universal CEO Angelo Exarhakos said in a statement accompanying the announcement.  “We are honored to carry its legacy forward and committed to elevating the experience for fans, retailers, and publishers alike.”

Sparkle Pop Managing Partner Joel Weinshanker shared his thoughts on the sale.  “Throughout the Diamond Comics sale process, we have done all we can to ensure that the shops that customers rely on are prioritized,” he said.  “Even though we have been restricted on multiple occasions by the bankruptcy professionals from doing many things that would do that, we were focused in finding the best home for Free Comic Book Day. We think we’ve found that with Angelo and Universal.”

Universal’s plans for the event include an enhanced operational infrastructure utilizing Universal’s logistics, technology, and distribution networks; stronger cross-industry collaboration; and innovative fan experiences, including digital integrations, exclusive merchandise, and new marketing initiatives to evolve the event for a new generation.

Universal is preparing for Free Comic Book Day 2026 with open calls for publishers and announcements of exclusive titles, promotional tie-ins, and additional event features.
