Lester of the Lesser Gods #1 delivers apocalyptic fantasy laughs

Lester of the Lesser Gods #1

Lester, the larping bastard son of the Odin, wanders the post-apocalyptic wasteland after thwarting Satan’s attempt to bring about the end of days. But can this hero of the downtrodden survive the battle arena of Will Frye the Technomancer Guy. Lester of the Lesser Gods #1 kicks off fantasy insanity set in a post-apocalyptic world.

Written by Eric Powell and Lucky Yates, Lester of the Lesser Gods #1 is insanity at its best. The story follows Odin’s bastard son as he larps his way through the destroyed world around him. He’s a dork, he’s not physically there, and he’s kind of an ass. He’s the opposite in so many ways of Powell’s beloved character the Goon and it’s fantastic.

The story is a typical fantasy adventure but both pokes fun at and clearly loves those types of stories. It knows its main character Lester is an ass and Powell and Yates make that central to the story in ways so readers won’t be turned off by him. This is a case where the negative at the center of it all doesn’t kill the comic.

Where the comic really stands out is the art. Gideon Kendall packs so much in a story that already has a lot packed in. There’s jokes not in the dialogue and the action but in the details. It has no issue letting things just hang out beyond Lester’s gut. The visuals also interestingly blend our world with a fantasy spin to it.

When it comes to Lester of the Lesser Gods #1 think Mad Max meets Conan the Barbarian but add in some dick and fart jokes. It’s zany, it’s weird, it’s one where you need to look at the details of the art to let it all sink in.
