Black Lightning co-creators Jenny Isabella and Trevor Von Eeden both contributed to DC’s upcoming Black Lightning 50th Anniversary Special, due out in January. Isabella wrote the lead story with Brandon Thomas (who Isabella describes as his “chosen successor”); art is by Fico Ossio. Von Eeden contributed a variant cover. Other stories in the 48-page Special are written by Danny Lore, Greg Anderson Elysee and Al Letson, with art by Karen S. Darboe, Darryl Banks, and Sedat Ozgen.
The lead story has Black Lightning protecting Metropolis while Superman is away, fighting alongside the Outsiders (Katana, the Signal, and Cassandra Cain), encountering his daughters Anissa and Jennifer, and connecting with Mr. Terrific and Steel as the character’s vision in DC K.O. looms over the story.
The Special features an A cover by Edwin Galmon and Andrew Dalhouse, and variants by Fico Ossio and Tamra Bonvillain, Trevor Von Eeden and Chris Stomayor, and a glow-in the dark variant by Cully Hamner. The $5.99 one-shot will drop January 27, 2027.
The character was introduced in 1977 in Black Lightning #1 by Isabella and Von Eeden.
Isabella (writing as Jenny Blake) wrote a story in the DC Pride 2025 anthology about coming out as transgender (see “Anthology Adds Story“).
