On October 14, Stonemaier Games will release the third game in the refreshed Tokaido series, Namiji.

Similar to the original Tokaido (see “Stonemaier Reveals New Edition of ‘Tokaido’”), Namiji puts players in the Japan of the past, inviting them to take the finest journey they can manage, but this time their journey is at sea.  The players sail around the Japanese archipelago, seeking experiences including fishing, making offerings to the sea deities, and admiring marine animals.

The players make their way around the one-way track, the one furthest back always moving next rather than following a fixed turn order.  The space they land on determines their action for the turn.  Along the way, they angle for fish, scoring points for the way they fill their nets, collect crustaceans in a push-your-luck style mini-game, earn secret end-game goals, and acquire in-game benefits by collecting objects on the docks.

Namiji comes with a double-sided 548mm by 548mm game board, 5 wooden boats, 109 cards, more than 150 tokens, 5 boat mats, 5 reference cards, and a cloth bag.  A solo mode is also included, which uses 16 solo cards and a pair of Automa mats.  Stonemaier’s version comes with the Namiji expansion set fully integrated into the core game and features a reworked rulebook and reference cards.  The game is intended for one to five players and takes about 45 minutes to play.

Namiji was originally published by Funforge in 2022 (see “‘Tokaido’ Sequel ‘Namiji’“) and was created by Tokaido designer Antoine Bauza with artwork by Naiade.  Stonemaier Games acquired rights to the series in 2024 (see “Stonemaier Games Acquires ‘Tokaido’“) and released its own version of the original game and the two-player Tokaido Duo last year (see “Stonemaier Announces Three Games“).

Next month, Stonemaier will release Braided Skies (see “Stonemaier Announces ‘Braided Skies’“).
