God Packs Inherently Change the Way Prerelease Limited Events Operate; Organizers Have Options
Wizards of the Coast offered up advice for handling the opening of a Magic: The Gathering God Pack at WPN events.
These newly announced rare packs (see “God Packs Return“) have the potential to cause quite a stir if opened at prerelease or a limited event. If a player were allowed to use a God Pack in these tournaments, it could potentially create an unfair advantage as their card pool would have more mythics and rares than the other players. To mitigate this issue, WotC issued some suggestions for organizers running WPN events.
When a God Pack is opened at a limited event, the player should call over a judge/tournament organizer. Beyond that point, the judge/organizer has discretion as to whether or not this pack remains in the event. WotC suggests removing the God Pack from the event, allowing the player who opened it to keep the cards, and replacing it at no charge by giving that play an unopened booster from the same set.
For casual draft or certain sealed events, organizers may choose to leave the God Pack in the pool. A draft featuring a God Pack could be a pretty wild event for players, and the pack wouldn’t cause too much of an imbalance in gameplay, as players would draft cards from all the pack in the pool, one by one. At Regional Championships and the Pro Tour, God Packs will always be removed from play and replaced. a
