An ICv2 Release. Attendees at the ICv2 Insider Talks at New York Comic Con can hear from longtime Marvel executive Dan Buckley on the future of comics in a discussion moderated by ComicsBeat and Publishers Weekly’s Heidi MacDonald.
Among the topics planned for discussion are the future roles of the various comic formats in the future, the evolution of the customer base, the evolution of the channels for comics, and the impact of the ever-stronger interaction of storylines from print and from other media on the business.
Buckley, who will be moving on from Marvel in 2027 (see “Buckley Moves On”) had a big impact on the company during his tenure, which was recognized by Marvel Studios President and Chief Creative Officer Kevin Feige in a statement accompanying the announcement of Buckley’s departure. “From events like Civil War, Secret Wars, X-Men: Age of Krakoa, and the soon-to-be released Marvel Midnight imprint, to the expansion into video games, television, animation and more, Marvel’s influence on popular culture expanded under Dan’s leadership, bringing our characters and stories to new fans around the world,” he said. “Dan has left a lasting mark on Marvel’s legacy and on the comics industry, and I’m deeply grateful to him and pleased we will have his full support through this transition.”
Buckley has a long association with ICv2 conferences at New York Comic Con, participating in multiple events beginning in 2008, when he was a panelist in a panel on Graphic Novels and Tweens at the ICv2 Graphic Novel Conference (see “ICv2 Graphic Novel Conference“).
The ICv2 Insider Talks: The Future of Fandom, an industry event for business and creative professionals, will be held from 3:00-6:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 8 in the dramatic 4th Floor River Pavilion at the Javits Center, in association with New York Comic Con.
The Future of Comics (4:00-4:30 p.m.)
During his time at Marvel, including a 22-year stretch as President and Publisher, current Head of Marvel Comics & Franchise Dan Buckley has been at the center of American comic publishing and the expansion of comics into a major force in the popular culture. As he helps navigate Marvel to a new leadership era and a new base in Burbank, he sits down with Eisner Award-winning journalist Heidi MacDonald (ComicsBeat, Publishers Weekly) to look ahead to the future of comics.
Throughout his 35-year career, Dan Buckley has helped shape Marvel into one of the most influential entertainment brands in the world, stewarding characters and stories that have defined pop culture for more than 85 years. Previously, he led Marvel’s expansion across television, animation, games, consumer products, licensing, and publishing, including Civil War, Secret Wars, and X-Men’s Age of Krakoa. Buckley holds a BA in Economics from St. Lawrence University and an MBA from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
Heidi MacDonald is the editor-in-chief of Eisner Award-winning website ComicsBeat.com, and KComicsBeat.com, and a contributing editor to Publishers Weekly. She has edited comics for DC Comics, Disney, First Second Books, Z2 and more. You can hear her bi-weekly on the More to Come podcast.
