As Violent Weather Rips Through Indianapolis; Torrential Rains Leak Onto Convention Floor
Attendees of Gen Con 2026 had their mettle tested this year as the Indianapolis Convention Center and Lucas Oil Stadium were both rocked by violent weather on August 1, 2026.
Tornado warnings were issued for Indianapolis by the National Weather Service before 5:30 PM on the Saturday of Gen Con, where over 70,000 gamers had congregated for The Best Four Days in Gaming (see “Gen Con Sold Out“). Shortly afterward, tornado sirens went off, and torrential rain and high winds hit the downtown Indianapolis area. During this weather event, the ICC speaker system encouraged attendees to move to the safer areas of the main building.
As the storm hit, attendees and exhibitors were given a surprise, mid-convention shower as the roofs of both the ICC and Lucas Oil Stadium began to leak onto the convention floor. The deluge of rain outside pierced the ceiling of both buildings, causing standing water to accumulate on the convention floor and putting lots of pricey cardboard in jeopardy. According to multiple social media posts and articles by the IndyStar, the roof leakage landed in multiple spots across both buildings and the high winds caused significant damage to vendors’ tents to the Gen Con Block Party in the back of the ICC.
Storms have been fairly common during Gen Con in years past (see “Gen Con 2022“), but this is the first time a storm has done any sort of significant damage to the convention halls or the surrounding hotels. There have been no reports of significant injury or on how much damage was done to exhibitor inventory. However, this event may be inspiration for Gen Con organizers to take a second look at their natural disaster response protocols for next year, especially as their attendance numbers keep climbing.
