Rolling for Initiative is a weekly column by Scott Thorne, PhD, owner of Castle Perilous Games & Books in Carbondale, Illinois and instructor in marketing at Southeast Missouri State University. This week, Thorne discusses the recent DCC Day and upcoming Season of Magic for Dungeons & Dragons.
The store hosted Goodman Games’ annual Dungeon Crawl Classics (DCC) Day yesterday, and the results were underwhelming (see “DCC Day 2026“). We did have one person waiting to get in for the items when we opened the store and a second showed up within the hour for them as well, but they were only interested in the free Adventure Pack and the foil-etched adventure.
As usual, we saw zero interest in the limited-edition core RPG rules, but usually we have some buyers for the annual adventure Goodman Games releases for the event. However, as I am writing this, there is nothing. Not even players for the DCC Game we had scheduled for the day. I’m not sure if it has something to do with the heat and air quality, or if it was the lack of variety compared to last year’s offerings but those two customers were the extent of interest locally.
Given that over 150 stores participated this year in both the U.S. and overseas, the event is fairly popular. I always want to emphasize that what happens in our store is not emblematic of retailers as a whole. I appreciate Goodman Games putting on DCC Day, wish more companies wanted to celebrate their product lines with events like this, and will certainly sign up again next year.
Speaking of promoting product lines, Wizards of the Coast has provided details on what stores and players for the upcoming Season of Magic organized play program for Dungeons & Dragons, designed to promote the Arcana Unleashed and Arcana Unleashed: Deadfall books (see “D&D ‘Season of Magic’ Organized Play“). Much like the Season of Horror, this one comes with a scenario taking players through six weeks of play as well as premiums for participating players.
Unfortunately, what it lacks (at least as far as I can tell from what I have read, and based on what the Season of Horror kits contained) are any in-store promotional materials for the event, signup sheets et cetera. I know we can create these, but it seems a missed opportunity for WotC to send out materials promoting Arcana Unleased and encouraging customers to pre-order it from stores in order to have it in hand before the start of the Season of Magic.
As a matter of fact, I’ve seen a lot less promotion and promotional materials for the new D&D books this year than I did in 2024 and 2025. In the past, we received the metal three book display stand, a life-size (more or less) cardboard standee and banners featuring the covers of the three core D&D rulebooks. This year, nothing (so far). One would think that, given that D&D needs players to buy the books or subscribe to D&D Beyond, WotC would be making more of a push to sell new rulebooks and get people to sign up for in-store events, but there’s nothing that I have seen to date.
