VIZ Media kicked off the weekend with a spate of new license announcements featuring some familiar names. Here’s a look at the highlights:
Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo, by Gege Akutami and artist Yuji Iwasaki, is a three-volume spinoff of the best-selling manga that’s set 68 years after the end of the culling game and features two siblings who are pulled into a space battle after aliens invade the earth. Akutami is both the writer and the artist for the main Jujutsu Kaisen series.
Dissection, by Junji Ito, is a collection of previously unpublished work by the master of horror manga, including an unfinished rom-com he created before he became the master of horror manga.
Takehiko Inoue’s legendary basketball manga Slam Dunk gets the deluxe treatment with a new hardcover edition with new covers, color pages that weren’t included in the paperbacks, and volumes divided by story arc.
Detective Conan gets his name back! For tedious legal reasons, VIZ has been publishing Gosho Aoyama’s long-running mystery series under the title Case Closed, but now there will be a new set of 3-in-1 omnibi with not only the original title (which matches the title of the anime) but also the other original character names restored.
Just two weeks after the upstart publisher Manga Mavericks announced it has licensed an early manga by Taiyo Matsumoto (see “Manga Mavericks”), VIZ comes back with another Matsumoto title, although this one is not written by him. Takemitsu Zamurai (literally, “Bamboo Sword”) is an eight-volume samurai manga written by Issei Eifuku, with Matsumoto handling the art. The story follows a samurai with a violent past who moves to a tenement neighborhood and sells his sword, replacing it with a bamboo one, but ends up getting drawn into violent conflicts in order to protect his neighbors.
No Glass Slippers for Me: Reincarnated Cinderella, by writer Mio Nanao and artist Rei Toma (creator of Dawn of the Arcana and The King’s Beast) is an isekai tale about three modern teens who get the opportunity to change the plot when they are reincarnated as fairy-tale heroines.
Sins, by Shuzo Oshimi, is a collection of four short stories dealing with guilt, shame, pride, and loneliness, by the master of psychological manga whose works include The Flowers of Evil and Blood on the Tracks. VIZ announced another Oshimi title, Sound of a Blink, earlier this year (see “VIZ Announces New ‘Apothecary Diaries’ Manga, ‘Jujutsu Kaisen’ Box Set“).
Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure: Over Heaven is a light novel by NISIOISIN, with artwork by Jojo creator Hirohiko Araki; VIZ will publish it as a hardcover with a gold foil stamped cover.
