Manga Mavericks Licenses Early Work by Taiyo Matsumoto

The indie manga publisher Manga Mavericks has licensed Brothers of Japan, by Eisner Award-winning creator Taiyo Matsumoto.  The 11 short manga stories in the collection were created when Matsumoto was in his 20s, in the late 1980s and early 1990s, and was first published in 1995 in Japan.  The Manga Mavericks edition is based on an updated 2010 edition and is the first time the collection has been published in English.  The 216-page paperback, rated for ages 13 and up, will be released in February 2027 with an MSRP of $14.99.

Matsumoto’s work has won multiple Eisner Awards, most recently in 2025 for Tokyo These Days.  VIZ Media, which publishes most of Matsumoto’s work in English, released a 30th Anniversary Edition of his Tekkonkinkreet in 2023 (see “Manga Gift Guide“).  Many of his manga, including Tekkonkinkreet and Ping Pong, have been adapted into anime.
