Writer Ed Brubaker and artist Sean Phillips, creators of Reckless, Criminal, and Kill or Be Killed, are back with a new paranoid thriller about a writer battling writer’s block. Unfinished Tales is the story of Finnegan Blake, a successful author laboring to finish the final volume of his epic fantasy series. When an old friend shows up with a possible solution, Blake jumps at it, but the deal soon turns dark. Image Comics will publish the original graphic novel on November 11, 2026, in comic shops and December 8 in bookstores. The 144-page hardcover will have an MSRP of $25.99.
“I’ve always been fascinated by why people write, or in this case, why they don’t, and so I took the idea of writers block and ran into the darkness with it,” Brubaker said in a statement accompanying the announcement. “Unfinished Tales is a deep dive into the world of writers and publishing, the pressure to succeed, and what that may cost you. It’s also a very fucked up thriller about egos and ambition, because it’s about writers.”
Brubaker and Phillips won Eisner Awards in 2007 for Criminal, in 2012 for Criminal: The Last of the Innocent, in 2016 for The Fade Out, in 2019 for My Heroes Have Always Been Junkies, and in 2021 for Pulp. Their most recent collaboration is The Knives (see “New ‘Criminal’ Graphic Novel”), and they have a new graphic novel, Five Gears in Reverse, due out on May 27. Criminal is being adapted into a television series by Amazon Prime (see “Emilia Clarke Cast in ‘Criminal’”) that is slated for release later this year.
