The second season of Netflix’s Devil May Cry series is almost here, and the streaming platform has dropped a new trailer for the animated adaptation. While previous trailers haven’t wasted any time in reminding people that Dante’s reunion with his long-lost brother is going to get violent, it looks like that sibling rivalry will have to wait as the Sons of Sparda will be facing off against not one but two major antagonists: Mundus from the very first Devil May Cry game, and Arius from the game’s first–and extremely divisive–sequel.
“A war between worlds ignites as Dante must battle the only force that mirrors his own: his estranged twin brother, Vergil. Dante must confront his own devils and the feeling of family he lost as a child,” the official plot synopsis for Devil May Cry 2 reads.
While Mundus is briefly glimpsed in the trailer, it looks like Netflix and showrunner Adi Shankar’s interpretation of the character is sticking to the version seen in the games. The de facto ruler of the Demon Realm, Mundus had his plans to invade the Human Realm thwarted by the demon swordsman Sparda.
After a successful rebellion, Sparda sealed the doorway to the Demon Realm and saved humanity, but as seen in the first season of Devil May Cry, that supposedly noble act had dire consequences for the demons trapped in that realm.
The other big surprise is the appearance of Arius, the main antagonist of Devil May Cry 2. A modern-day sorcerer and businessman who sought to gain the god-like powers of the demon lord Argosax, Arius was eventually defeated by the game’s second playable character, Lucia. While not a terrible villain, Arius has been forgotten about and swept under the rug in the wider Devil May Cry lore due to the negative reception around Devil May Cry 2. The game is considered to be the black sheep of the series, due to its sloppy gameplay and barebones story.
Devil May Cry Season 2 lands on Netflix May 12, and once again features the vocal talents of Johnny Yong Bosch as Dante, Robbie Daymond as Vergil, and Scout Taylor-Compton as Lady.
