Publisher, grading company, and marketplace Beckett, which was acquired by PSA and SGC parent Collectors (Collectors Holdings Inc.) in December (see “PSA Parent Acquiring Beckett”), is shutting down CBCS, its comic grading service, in April, the company announced. New submissions will be accepted through April 17 and processed normally. Beckett acquired CBCS, which was founded in 2014, in 2017.
The collectibles conglomerate’s plans for comic grading were not immediately clear. “We’re increasing our focus and investment in the core Beckett brand and our broader grading capabilities, with announcements to come soon,” the announcement said. “As part of our strategy to focus on the Beckett brand, we’ve made the challenging decision to shut down CBCS.”
Beckett expanded on the statement above, which appeared on social media, on its own site, where it elaborated on what was meant by “…increasing the focus and investment in the core Beckett brand.”
“This includes continued development of our trading card and autograph authentication services, along with ongoing hiring and team expansion across key areas of the business,” the Beckett statement said. “These investments are focused on improving turnaround times, enhancing the customer experience, and strengthening the long-term value we provide to collectors.”
Beckett currently offers card grading services but does not offer comic grading. Beckett sister company PSA, known primarily for its card grading, began offering comic grading services last summer.
