American Mythology Returns to the Direct Market

The comics publisher American Mythology, which went on hiatus in 2025 in the wake of the Diamond bankruptcy, is returning to publishing and working with Prana Publishers to promote its line to comics retailers. The publisher also announced a new series, Catching Hell, a grindhouse horror comic starring Reggie Bannister, best known as Reggie from the Phantasm films.

“Reaching our 10th anniversary is both humbling and energizing,” said James Kuhoric, President of American Mythology, in a statement accompanying the announcement. “The past year presented unprecedented challenges for publishers across the industry, but it also gave us the opportunity to refocus and rebuild.” A slate of new projects is planned.

Information about distribution will be announced in the near future.

Catching Hell, co-written by S.A. Check and Kuhoric, with art by Emanuele Tommarelli, will be crowdfunded on Kickstarter with a portion of the proceeds going to the real Reggie Bannister, who has serious health problems.

“Reggie is the soul of blue-collar horror,” Check said. “He’s not destiny-bound. He’s not chosen. He’s just the guy still standing when the smoke clears. This book exists to celebrate that spirit—to let Reggie cut loose, crack skulls, and remind everyone why he’s a legend.”

Check and Kuhoric were also the writing team for American Mythology’s Return of the Living Dead miniseries (see “Evil Genius Adds ‘Return of the Living Dead’”), which launched in 2024 with covers by Mark Spears and others.
