Vertical to Publish Deluxe Edition of Osamu Tezuka's 'Black Jack'

Vertical’s 2008 edition

Vertical will publish a three-volume deluxe edition of Osamu Tezuka’s Black Jack, a collection of short stories about a rogue physician who is willing to try outrageous experiments in order to save his patients.  Black Jack Deluxe 1, the first of three oversized hardcovers, will go on sale on September 1, 2026, with an MSRP of $54.95.  The first volume will comprise stories that were originally published in color, while the second and third will collect stories selected by Tezuka as the best of the series.

VIZ Media published two Black Jack stories in comics format in the late 1980s and two paperback volumes in 1999.  In 2008, Vertical launched a 17-volume collection (see “Vertical Has ‘Black Jack’ Manga”).  The first three volumes of that series were Diamond  Comic Distributors-exclusive hardcovers with additional stories not included in the paperbacks (see “Diamond’s ‘Black Jack’ Hardcovers”).  Like the early VIZ titles, these volumes appear to be out of print.  Black Jack was an influential series with numerous spinoffs (see “Tezuka Characters Cross Over in New Manga”) and has been adapted into both anime and live-action series and films.
