WotC Licenses ‘World of Warcraft’ and ‘Star Wars’ for ‘D&D’ Gameplay Expansion Books
Wizards of the Coast announced that they have begun a Universes Beyond initiative for Dungeons & Dragons.
It was really only a matter of time before WotC applied a version of the Universes Beyond licensing initiative, that was very successful with Magic: The Gathering (see “‘Universes Beyond’ Announcement Reveals Their Licensing Plans”), to D&D. This initiative ushers the world’s most iconic RPG into a new era where fans can visit various licensed settings via official D&D Gameplay Expansions. The first two licensed expansions will be for the World of Warcraft and Star Wars IPs.
“With Universes Beyond we are expanding Dungeons & Dragons into even more worlds we love, like World of Warcraft,” said Dan Ayoub, Head of Dungeons & Dragons Franchise at Wizards of the Coast. “What’s more, in a crossover that fans have dreamed about for years, Star Wars is coming to D&D for the first time, bringing the iconic galaxy to our players’ tabletops. Our wide range of announcements show that we are committed to delivering more choices, and more ways for friends and family to adventure together.”
The D&D: World of Warcraft Gameplay Expansion will hit stores on November 17, 2026. In this expansion, players can make a new WoW character or recreate their WoW main character, and use them to delve into dungeons and zones familiar to the IP. The D&D: Star Wars Gameplay Expansion is scheduled to arrive in the beginning of 2027, and more information will be released closer to the product’s launch.
WotC also announced a Dark Sun expansion for D&D and a Greyhawk expansion, both coming in 2027. They expanded upon their plans to bring iconic D&D creators back into the fold (see “Brings Luke Gygax Back into the Franchise”), revealing that they will be working with Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman on a new Dragonlance product and continue to work with Luke Gygax on Greyhawk.
