Don Heck’s original art splash page from Marvel’s Tales of Suspense #39 (1963) went for $3.875 million at Heritage’s Comic Art Signature Auction on July 10-12, 2026.
The black and white splash page depicts the first appearance of Marvel Comics’ Iron Man character standing under the titling that reads “Iron Man is Born!” This original piece of artwork passes page 24 from Secret Wars #8 (1984), which sold for $3.36 million in 2022 (see “Breaks U.S. Record“), to become the most expensive piece of U.S. comic art ever sold at auction. Also of note, Al Williamson, Carlos Garzon, Tom Palmer, and Ron Frenz’s original art for page 55 of Marvel Super Special #27: Star Wars: Return of the Jedi Story went for $275,000 and the original cover art for Secret Wars II #1, by John Byrne and Terry Austin, went for $250,000.
