Mike Mignola Goes Meta in 'Young Hellboy: Thrilling Sky Adventures'

Mike Mignola is teaming up with co-writer Tom Sniegoski and artist Craig Rousseau for a Young Hellboy miniseries with a twist: Scarlett Santiago gets her own comic book, with Young Hellboy as her biggest fan. The pulp-inspired superheroine first appeared in the 2021 series Young Hellboy: The Hidden Land, by the same creative team. In Young Hellboy: Thrilling Sky Adventures, she returns and, in the comic-within-a-comic, teams up with a new partner, the Ghost Leopard, to fight a series of dastardly villains. The first issue will go on sale on May 20, 2026, with a main cover by Rousseau, who will be the cover artist for the miniseries, and a variant by David Hitchcock.

“Since wrapping up the Young Hellboy: The Hidden Land, I’d been thinking about Scarlett Santiago, the Sky Devil, and how much we still didn’t know about her past adventures (before being possessed by the spirit of a giant ape god),” Sniegoski said in a statement accompanying the announcement. “I was hoping that there would be a way to tell some of Sky Devil’s earlier exploits, and with Thrilling Sky Adventures, we’re getting to do just that.”

Sniegoski, and Rousseau are the creative team on Dynamite’s Herculoids series, for which Mignola drew a cover (see “More Details on Herculoids”).
