'Zootopia 2' Opens Big; Macy's Parade Viewership Breaks Record; Warner Bros. Bidding, Round Two; 'Assassin's Creed' and 'Gundam' Casting; 'Godzilla' Anime Series; Toei Announces 'PROJECT R.E.D.'

The shopping season is heating up, and so is Hollywood news.  Time for a round-up!

Zootopia 2 was a big winner at the Thanksgiving weekend box office with a $556 million global take, making it the fourth biggest opening weekend in history, according to Variety.  The domestic box office was also impressive, with a $156 million five-day gross from 4,000 venues.  The box office for the three-day weekend was $96.8 million.  Zootopia 2 was the second-biggest Thanksgiving weekend opening of all time, behind last year’s Moana 2.

This year’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade broke the 2024 viewership record with 34.3 million viewers, according to Variety The preliminary viewership data is projected to beat out last year’s numbers by about 8% (see “Parade Viewership Up“).  New floats for 2025 featured a wide variety of pop culture icons including Labubu, KPop Demon Hunters, and Stranger Things Season 5 (see “‘Stranger Things’ S5“).

The bidding to buy Warner Bros. Discovery has entered into a second round, according to The Hollywood Reporter The first round of bidding ended on November 20, 2025 (see “First Warner Bros. Discovery Bids“), and the next round of bids are due on December 1, 2025.  Netflix and Comcast are looking to acquire the Warner Bros. streaming and studio operations; Paramount Skydance is trying to buy the entire company outright.

Netflix added Toby Wallace to the cast of Assassin’s Creed, according to Variety Wallace will play the lead role in the upcoming TV series based on the hit video game (see “‘Assassin’s Creed’ Live-Action TV Series“).

Legendary Entertainment is in talks with Noah Centineo to join the Gundam movie, according to The Hollywood Reporter This live action movie, directed by Sweet Tooth’s Jim Mickle, already includes Sydney Sweeney in a starring role (see “Sydney Sweeney Joins ‘Gundam’“).

TOHO Animation announced a new Godzilla anime via their X account. The new series introduces a character that has Godzilla’s power coursing through his body.  The announcement of this series comes just over a year after Toho bought GKIDS (see “Toho Buys GKids“).

Toei unveiled a new tokusatsu series, PROJECT R.E.D. (Records of Extraordinary Dimensions) This comes as Super Sentai (see “‘Super Sentai’“), the series that inspired Power Rangers, wraps up a 50-year television run. The first title in this series will be Super Space Sheriff Gavan Infinity, which is a re-imagining of the cult classic Space Sheriff Gavan series that ran from 1982 to 1983.Source: ICv2
