Big Box Office News; First Warner Bros. Discovery Bids; 'Game of Thrones' Series News; 'TMNT' Slate Shuffle; New 'Stargate,' 'Grim' Series

There’s movie and TV news as we head into the holiday, and we round it up here.

Wicked: For Good brought in $150 million at the domestic box office over the weekend, making it the second largest opening of the year behind Minecraft, according to Deadline.  Predator: Badlands came in third and is now at $76 million since it opened two weeks ago (see “Predator Box Office“).  Meanwhile, Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, after a big opening in China, is now at $730 million worldwide and is the highest-grossing foreign film ever released in the U.S., according to The Hollywood Reporter.

At least three companies submitted bids for all or part of Warner Bros. Discovery by the bidding deadline last Thursday, according to Variety Paramount Skydance has submitted a bid for the whole company, while Netflix and Comcast have submitted bids for the streaming and studio operations, leaving behind the cable TV business, which was due to be spun off next year.  (for more on the sale of WBD, see “Another Year, Another Owner”).

HBO has renewed its two Game of Thrones spin-off series, which takes them through 2028, the network announced. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has been renewed for a second season ahead of the season one premiere on January 18, 2026 (see “’Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ Trailer“).  The second season is planned for 2027.  HBO renewed House of the Dragon for a fourth season, which will debut in 2028. The third season will be released in Summer 2026. 

New owner Paramount is revamping the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles media pipeline, and is in talks to put Neal Moritz in charge of a new TMNT live action feature, according to The Hollywood Reporter The studio is reportedly looking for a live-action/CGI hybrid franchise similar to Sonic, which Moritz produces.  In the process, development of The Last Ronin, based on the hugely successful graphic novel (see “’Last Ronin’“), has been shut down, at least for now.  Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the spinoff series from the TMNT: Mutant Mayhem animated feature, has been shut down after production of season two (see “’Tales of the TMNT’ S2“.  The sequel to Mutant Mayhem will still be released September 17, 2027.

Alfred Gough and Milles Millar, showrunners of Wednesday, and Jennifer Yuh Nelso, supervising director of Love, Death + Robots, will executive produce an adult animated series based on BOOM! studios comic series Grim for Netflix, along with executives from Boom! and the series co-creators, the company announced.  Grim, the 25-issue BOOM! series by Stephanie Phillips and Flaviano, concluded this month.

Prime Video has ordered a new Stargate series from Amazon MGM Studios, with creator and showrunner of the three previous series Martin Gero attached.  Prime Video has been looking at developing new material for the Stargate property since it acquired MGM (see “’Stargate’ “).  The most recent series was Stargate: Origins, which was released in 2018 (see “Trailer“).Source: ICv2
