S.H.I.E.L.D. Returns to the Marvel Universe in 'Captain America' #6

After a decade of absence from Marvel Comics, the covert organization known as S.H.I.E.L.D. is making its return in Captain America #6, by writer Chip Zdarsky and artists Delio Diaz and Frank Alpizar, with character designs by regular series artist Valerio Schiti.  The issue, due out on January 21, 2026, kicks off a new story arc that will lead up to Marvel’s planned summer event, Armageddon Assembles (see “Marvel Announces Summer Event”), which will be helmed by Zdarsky.

The new storyline follows the events of One World Under Doom and finds Captain American defending Latveria from an existing threat and dealing with a new incarnation of S.H.I.E.L.D., which was dissolved in Secret Empire in 2017.

“Ever since S.H.I.E.L.D. disbanded almost 10 years ago, the idea of bringing it back has come up at every creative retreat we’ve had,” Marvel Editor in Chief C.B. Cebulski said in a statement accompanying the announcement.  “We’ve been working on the return of S.H.I.E.L.D. for a long time, and especially so over the past few months since our most recent creative retreat.  After digging more into this Captain America story with Chip, Valerio, and our teams, it became clear that this was the right story and right time to do so.  And with this year being the 60th anniversary since S.H.I.E.L.D.’s debut, we thought it was even more fitting to make this happen.”
