The sixth issue of IDW’s Godzilla will feature the death of Godzilla, but that doesn’t mean the series is ending: Godzilla will rise again in a new form, Kai-Sei Energy Godzilla, in Godzilla #7, which kicks off a new story arc. And among the variant covers for Godzilla #6 is a “Death of Superman” homage by Dan Jurgens, one of the creators of that classic event and the co-creator of its iconic cover.
IDW launched a new Godzilla universe in July (see “IDW Announces Godzilla Connected Universe”) with a flagship series by writer Tim Seeley and artist Nikola Čižmešija that is set in 1954 and incorporates a new energy source, Kai-Se, that awakens the kaiju from their slumber. Hendry Prasetya will be the artist for Godzilla #7, in which Godzilla returns, free of physical constraints and more powerful than before.
Godzilla #6 will be released on January 7, 2026, with covers by Čižmešija, Baldemar Rivas, and Ito, in addition to the Jurgens cover. The Ito cover is also available without trade dress as a 1:25 incentive variant.
“When the good folks at IDW asked about the possibility of a special ‘Death of Godzilla’ cover that would play off the iconic cover that Brett Breeding and I did for Superman #75, I was definitely up for it,” Jurgens said in a statement accompanying the announcement. ”I’ve always been a fan of the big guy but hadn’t had a chance to draw him so this was the perfect way to scratch that itch.”
