DC Comics cancelled the series Red Hood on September 10, the day the first issue hit stores, due to social media comments by writer Gretchen Felker-Martin.
In an email sent to retailers, and provided to ICv2, DC said, “DC cancels existing orders for Red Hood #2 and Red Hood #3, and any orders for future issues of the series. DC will credit retailers for all invoiced copies of Red Hood #1, inclusive of copies that may have already been sold.”
The cancellation came after comments that Felker-Martin, who is transgender, posted on Bluesky after the shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. A Twitter screenshot of the comments showed her saying “Thoughts and prayers you Nazi bitch” and “Hope the bullet’s okay after touching Charlie Kirk.”
Kirk was an outspoken opponent of transgender rights, saying in an essay at The American Mind that “transgenderism and gender ‘fluidity’ are lies that hurt people and abuse kids”; in a 2024 Media Matters podcast he called for banning all gender-affirming care.
In an official statement, DC said “At DC Comics, we place the highest value on our creators and community and affirm the right to peaceful, individual expression of personal viewpoints. Posts or public comments that can be viewed as promoting hostility or violence are inconsistent with DC’s standards of conduct.”
A DC spokesperson said they had spoken to Felker-Martin previously about the company’s social media guidelines and that this was not specifically about the Charlie Kirk comments.
In August 2025, Assigned Media reported that Felker-Martin had been suspended from Bluesky for writing “I hope someone splits her skull” about the author and anti-transgender activist J.K. Rowling.
Felker-Martin is best known as a horror novelist and the author of Manhunt, Cuckoo, and Black Flame, all published by Tor. She had written several stories for DC, including backup stories in Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy, a story in DC Pride 2024 (see “DC Plans Pride Anthology”) and an eight-page Red Hood story for the Titans: Beast World Tour anthology.
Red Hood, written by Felker-Martin with art by Jeff Spokes, was to be the writer’s first ongoing series (see “Preview: ‘Red Hood’ #1”). Since DC announced the cancellation, single issues of the comic have sold on eBay for prices ranging from $34.99 to $64.35.
ICv2 reached out to Felker-Martin for comment but had not received a response at press time.
