IDW Publishing has extended its partnership with Godzilla owner Toho International, Inc., through 2029, and they have announced a new Godzilla connected universe, the Kai-Sei Era, that will launch with three new titles.
First up is a new ongoing Godzilla series, the first in a decade, by writer Tim Seeley and artist Nicola Čižmešija. Set in 1954, the series starts with an experiment with a new energy source, Kai-Sei, that awakens Godzilla and other kaiju from their slumber. As the U.S. G-Force fights off the giant monster attacks, a boy with Godzilla powers appears and holds the possibility of salvation or doom. The series will launch in July.
Coming in August, Godzilla: Escape the Deadzone, by writers Ethan Parker and Griffin Sheridan and artist Pablo Tunica, will introduce the first human/kaiju hybrid in the history of the franchise and explore the post-apocalyptic Deadzone, a feature of the new connected universe.
Starship Godzilla, by Chris Gooch and Oliver Ono, is another Toho first, features a crew of misfit space travelers heading toward the worlds of the kaiju on a series of missions that bring them danger and rewards but also involve a secret that could affect the entire universe.
IDW and Toho signed their first deal in 2020 (see “IDW and Toho International, Inc., Ink Monster ‘Godzilla’ Deal”), and they unveiled an ambitious new slate in 2024 (see “IDW Bets Big on Godzilla”).
