Kate Beaton’s ‘Ducks’ Wins International Literature Prize

Kate Beaton’s Ducks: Two Years in the Oil Sands has been awarded the Jan Michalski Prize for Literature, a Swiss international literature prize awarded to one book, regardless of language or format, each year.  In making the award, the jury called Ducks “a profoundly moving masterpiece thanks to the courage it embodies.” The jury of writers and one artist selects the titles to be considered for the award and the winner.  The prize includes CHF 50,000 (around $56,500 at today’s exchange rate), and a work of art by the draftsman Micael.

Ducks won both an Eiser Award, for Best Graphic Memoir (see “Eisner Awards 2023”), and a Harvey Award, for Book of the Year (see “Harvey Awards”). A new paperback edition will be released in May 2025 (see “D&Q Spring 2025”).
