The Oceania 2084 – Surplus Edition has officially been released in digital PDF format, with a hardback edition expected to be available in about a month. Inspired by George Orwell’s 1984, Oceania 2084 is a semi-collaborative storytelling game that invites players to explore themes of resistance and control within a dystopian world.
The game is available for download on itch.io and DriveThruRPG, following a successful Kickstarter campaign that enabled its production. Oceania 2084 offers an asymmetrical gameplay structure, with players taking on roles either as part of a resistance group or as “Big Brother,” who enforces the rules in this fictional setting. The game’s setting, “The City,” is intentionally undefined, allowing players to collectively shape their environment and storyline.
Designed for 3-8 players, Oceania 2084 uses a non-traditional approach to conflict resolution. Instead of a conventional dice-based system, it employs a risk-reward structure and strategic resource management. This approach blends elements from storytelling games and rogue-like mechanics, creating a framework where the focus is on interaction, moral choices, and navigating challenges in a controlled society.
The development of Oceania 2084 involved feedback from its Kickstarter backers and the game’s Discord community, which contributed to refining gameplay mechanics and narrative elements.
The Surplus Edition is available as a PDF bundle, and pre-orders for the hardback version can found here. A free Austere Edition, featuring the full ruleset in a minimal, text-only format, is also available as a downloadable PDF for those interested in exploring the game.
