Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa reveals that the successor to Nintendo Switch will be backward-compatible with Switch games and Nintendo Switch Online will also be available on it

As part of Nintendo’s latest financial highlights release, the company has revealed updated sales figures for several of its million-seller titles, including multiple Pokémon-related games that continue performing exceptionally well:

  • Pokémon Scarlet and Violet have sold 25.69 million units as of September 30, 2024
  • Pokémon Sword and Shield have sold 26.44 million units as of September 30, 2024
  • Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has sold 35.14 million units as of September 30, 2024

In addition, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa has confirmed that the upcoming successor to Nintendo Switch will be backward-compatible with Nintendo Switch games:

“Hello, this is Furukawa. At today’s business direction briefing, we announced that Nintendo Switch software will be playable on the successor to the Nintendo Switch. In addition, Nintendo Switch Online will also be available on the successor to the Nintendo Switch. We will provide more information on the successor to the Nintendo Switch, including compatibility with the Nintendo Switch, at a later date.”
