Twisted Cryptids, a new game from the creators of Here to Slay and Casting Shadows, has launched on Kickstarter. In the game, players take on the roles of Cryptids, mythological creatures trying to build their reputation among humans and other Cryptids to achieve legendary status.
The gameplay revolves around navigating encounters with humans, including hunters, hikers, and researchers, who react differently depending on the Cryptid’s actions. Players are tasked with hiding in various locations across The Wilderness, a game board made up of different sites, while manipulating the humans’ movements to avoid exposure or set up beneficial encounters.
Each player controls a unique Cryptid with its own special ability, which can be used once per round. Players also receive Hidden Trait cards, which provide secret objectives that can help boost their score at the end of the game. As players progress through the rounds, they must strategically manage encounters with humans, revealing their presence only when necessary, while maintaining control over key locations.
The game uses a combination of event cards and action cards to create dynamic gameplay. Events at the start of each round shift the way humans move across the board, while action cards give players the ability to lure, scare, or otherwise influence human behavior, helping them to position themselves for successful encounters.
At the end of five rounds, the Cryptid with the most Myth points, accumulated through encounters and completing objectives, is declared the winner and earns the title of True Legend.
Twisted Cryptids is currently live on Kickstarter with a pledge goal of $50,000, already surpassed with over $910,321 pledged. The campaign has 15 days remaining and will end on October 22.
