Stonemaier Games has acquired the Tokaido brand and games from FunForge.
The acquisition of Tokaido, one of Funforge’s flagship brands, was revealed by Stonemaier in their most recent newsletter update and shared with the public at Essen Spiel 2024. Stonemaier CEO Jamey Stegmaier said he saw Tokaido as a good fit for Stonemaier’s focus on Euro games for 1-5 players; Funforge wants to focus on new creations and the development of unique intellectual properties.
Stonemaier has already begun production on a Stonemaier-branded version of the base game. The new version will include an Automa solo mode (which will also be available separately for people that already own the game), upgraded components, a rulebook revised for clarity and accessibility, text on some cards and the character tiles, and reference cards for each player that explain the locations.
Stonemaier will also release Stonemaier versions of Tokaido Duo and Namiji (see “‘Tokaido’ Sequel ‘Namiji’“) and are looking into developing a new game in the series with designer Antoine Bauza. The new game will use the core mechanism and setting in a medium-weight game that’s more complex than the original.
