The original artwork for John Buscema’s Wolverine #1 (1988) hammered for $600,000 at Heritage’s September 12-15, 2024 Comics & Comic Art auction.

The original cover art being offered up at this auction was the Wolverine #1 cover from the character’s first ongoing solo series. This issue also saw the debut of Wolverine’s iconic black costume, drawn by the legendary Marvel artist John Buscema. While the $600,000 sum realized was nowhere near the record number set for a U.S. comic art sale, which was for page 25 of Secret Wars #8 (see “Comic Art Breaks U.S. Record “). However, it was an indicator that the original comic art market is still going strong.

Also of note, the original art from page 8 of Tales of Suspense #39 ended at over half a million dollars. This page depicts Iron Man’s origin story in the issue that was also the character’s first appearance in comics. The comic also includes the debut of Wong-Chu and Iron Man’s Model 1 armor.
