The Fire and Ice line from Icon Collectibles continues with another one of the main characters from the film, Teegra. The first figure, Darkwolf, arrived early in the year and has remained one of my favorites of the year so far, so I was eagerly anticipating this one. How does Teegra stack up? Let’s take a look!
The box features the iconic Frazetta poster for the film on the front and some lovely photography on the inside flap and side panel. It’s a nice quality piece that I feel a little bad recycling.
The figure comes with a spear, a knife, three heads (smile, neutral, and gritted teeth), three sets of hands (grip, loose, and splayed), a panther (Shaitan), two heads for Shaitan, a shawl, a loincloth, and two hairpieces.
Shaitan is mostly a slug figure with minimal articulation in the ball jointed head and tail. The head doesn’t move very much, but the tail swivels. There is one head that has a more calm face with relaxed ears and pupils and the other has pinned ears, no pupils and a hinged jaw. The sculpting is wonderful and you can clearly see the muscles and sinews at play underneath his fur. The head swap was a bit scary with the ball joint being extremely tight. I definitely would have preferred a more articulated panther, but I do already have that with the Guenhwyvar from Hasbro’s Drizzt figure.
The hands swap easily and fit securely, seem appropriate for the character, and work well with the included weapons.
The knife has a bit of ornate detail design in the grip and some battle damage on the blade highlighted with metallic paint and a dark wash.
The stick looks appropriately stick-like with a little bit of bark texture. I honestly don’t remember this from the film, but it’s been quite a while since I’ve seen it.
The spear has a fairly thin shaft with a bit of wood grain texture and some thin cord wrapped around for grip and to secure the spear tip. It feels a little delicate and realistic with sharp sculpting.
The shawl and loincloth are cast in a very thin translucent plastic. I think to match the film it should probably be a smidge more translucent, but it looks great on and sits pretty naturally. The loincloth is held on by an elastic thread. My memory of the movie was that the skirt piece didn’t have a seperate string than her bikini bottom so when I put the loincloth on, I line up the elastic with the sculpted line of her briefs.
The heads allow for some nice variety and I love that they included more windswept hair along with the neutral.
The sculpting is pretty phenomenal. Teegra’s design is deceptively simple, but they’ve done amazing work executing it and bringing the 2D artwork to three dimensions. The portraits are all very beautiful and they’ve made one of the shapelier figures I’ve seen in this scale. Frazetta women tend to have a particular physique and the sculpting captures that well. At about 6 and 1/4 inches tall, she fits in well with Darkwolf and Mythic Legions sized figures. I feel like she’s a bit too big to fit in with the Mezco Conan figures or Legends, not that she was intended to do so.
The articulation meets the minimum basic points to still be considered super-articulated. I get the sense that poseability is less of a priority for this line than sculpt continuity, but she still moves fairly well. The elbows knees and hips get about a 90 degree bend and I did notice that something inside the hip assembly would leave an indentation on the thigh if I pressed the movement too far. Fortunately a little heat popped that indent right out. Teegra has:
- Ball and socket head and mid-torso
- Swivel/hinge shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees, and ankles
- Swivel biceps and thighs (hidden)
The hair does limit the neck movement a bit so there isn’t a lot of looking up range, but the tilt is impressive. The crunch in the mid-torso has somewhat limited forward crunch movement, but the tilt and backward arch are both really nice there. The swivels at the bicep and thigh are hidden within the arm and leg and get a little movement, the thighs more than the bicep.
Paint is good with a solid base color for Teegra’s skin and some rosy overspray that brings life to that skin. The face details and lines on her bikini are all really sharp and clean.
Overall I’d say this is another really nice release from the Fire and Ice line. I think I would have preferred a little bit more clearance carved out on the biceps and the back of the thighs so the elbows and knees had better range of motion, but there is a nice balance of clean sculpting lines and articulation. Drop-down hips might have helped with the forward leg movement and I wish there was a waist swivel, but can see how there isn’t really the real estate for that in this costume design. My main concern is that the price is pretty rough. After shipping and taxes this comes in around $100 and while nice, my expectation is for a little bit more innovative and effective articulation for that price. I’m still in for a Larn or Nekron if they get there. While I’d love the cave man baddies too, at these prices I’d have to think long and hard about it.
