Eagle Games’ latest board game, “House of Fado,” offers players a chance to manage a traditional Portuguese restaurant known as Casa de Fado, where dining and the soulful tunes of Fado music create a culturally rich experience. This medium-weight worker placement game challenges players to attract customers, manage staff, and promote fadistas (Fado musicians) to gain prestige for their restaurant.
In the game, the management of the restaurant and the promotion of musicians are central themes, engaging players in the intricate dance of keeping a cultural establishment thriving. Players utilize a “bump action” mechanic, familiar to fans of designer Vital Lacerda’s “The Gallerist,” which facilitates fast-paced yet strategic gameplay, typically concluding within an hour.
The game features elements typical of a Fado performance, including characters such as a guitarist playing the unique twelve-string Guitarra Portuguesa, a classical guitarist with the Viola de Fado, and a lead fadista. Each character adds depth and authenticity to the gameplay, reflecting the traditional setup found in Fado music.
“House of Fado” is the second collaboration between game designers Vital Lacerda and João Quintela Martins, who aim to blend engaging gameplay with a deep appreciation for Portuguese cultural traditions.
As of now, the Kickstarter campaign for “House of Fado” has successfully garnered $44,253 from 929 backers, surpassing its original goal of $21,000. The campaign is set to conclude on May 17, with 14 days remaining for interested backers to participate.
