Free League Publishing, in collaboration with Benjamin Tobitt, has announced the upcoming release of a new role-playing game titled “Black Powder and Brimstone.” Set to launch on Kickstarter on April 25, the game merges themes of gunpowder and witchcraft in a grim-dark fantasy setting.
“Black Powder and Brimstone” is designed as a standalone game while also being compatible with the multi-award-winning RPG MÖRK BORG. The game offers players a mix of lore, magic, war, and demonic elements, all illustrated and written by Benjamin Tobitt. Free League Publishing, known for their work on titles such as “Dragonbane,” “Vaesen – Nordic Horror Roleplaying,” and “ALIEN RPG,” will handle the printing and distribution.
Set amidst a prolonged war between the Orthodox and Puritans of the Church of the Sacred Blood, players in “Black Powder and Brimstone” navigate a tumultuous world as adventurers trying to survive and potentially profit from the ongoing conflict. The game features an array of unique weapons, including Black Powder weapons that have significant impact in combat, ignoring armor and potentially causing as much damage to the user as to the target.
Magic plays a critical role in the game, offering powerful abilities that can alter reality. However, the use of such powers comes with risks, particularly if performed in the presence of the wrong witnesses, which could attract the attention of the Inquisition.
“Black Powder and Brimstone” emphasizes a rules-light, art-heavy approach, providing a variety of character options, items, locations, and adventures. It is aimed at fans of gothic folk horror and swashbuckling action.
The game is part of the Free League Workshop initiative, which supports independent game creators. Benjamin Tobitt, who has a background in illustration, animation, and comic book art, brings a personal touch to the game, drawing on his experiences and research into historical and supernatural themes.
