Yen Press Gets Comics Adaptation of Source Novel for ‘3 Body Problem’

Yen Press has announced it will publish a Chinese adaptation of Cixin Liu’s novel The Three-Body Problem, which won the Hugo Award for Best Novel in 2015 and has sold over 3 million copies in North America. The Netflix adaptation, titled 3 Body Problem, launched on March 21, 2024, and racked up 11 million views in the first four days of release, according to Deadline.

The graphic novel is adapted by Jin Cai, Twilight Lu, and Silver, with art by XuDong Cai. Yen announced the acquisition during its panel at SakuraCon and will reveal more details, such as price and schedule, at a later date.

The story of a group of scientists and detectives who discover a secret pact between aliens and the Earth’s elites, The Three-Body Problem was first published in English in 2014 and is the first book in Liu’s Remembrance of Earth’s Past trilogy. It was a best-seller in China and won that country’s Galaxy Award, and it was the first work by an Asian creator to win the Hugo award for Best Novel. The Netflix adaptation was the second most watched show of the week and made Netflix’s Top 10 in 93 countries.

Yen Press released a manga adaptation of a short story by Liu, Taking Care of God, in February 2024 (see “Yen Press Adds Eight New Manga”).
