Two films with geek roots won Academy Awards on Sunday night. Hayao Miyazaki won his second Academy Award when his anime The Boy and the Heron took the award for Best Animated Feature. Miyazaki’s Spirited Away won the same award in 2003. Kaiju feature Godzilla Minus One (see “’Godzilla Minus One’ Trailer”) received an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects.
Warner Bros. Discovery revealed that the Game of Thrones: House of Dragon Season 2 will release in June 2024, according to Variety. The new season will debut just under two years after the launch of the first season, which drew 9.99 million viewers for its premiere episode (see “Renewed“).
Amazon Prime Video released its first teaser for the Fallout series (see below). This series, based on the popular video game series by Bethesda Softworks (see “Microsoft“), will begin streaming on April 11, 2024.
Netflix dropped a teaser for Parasyte: The Grey (see below). The series is a live action adaptation of the popular manga series (see “‘Parasyte’“).
Lionsgate signed John Wick director Chad Stahelski to a first look production deal, according to The Hollywood Reporter. This deal expands on his previous deal with Lionsgate that put Stahelski in charge of the Highlander and John Wick franchises (see “‘Highlander’ Greenlit“).
Sony announced that Ming-Na Wen will join the cast of newest Karate Kid movie, according to Variety. Ming-Na Wen is best known for her role in The Mandalorian (see “‘Mandalorian’ Trailer“) and as the lead in the original animated Mulan. She joins a cast that already includes Ben Wang in the lead role, Jackie Chan, Ralph Macchio, Joshua Jackson, and Sadie Stanley.
Warner Bros. Discovery is shutting down animation studio Rooster Teeth, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Rooster Teeth, which was folded into Warners in 2018 by then-parent AT&T (see “Rooster Teeth Now Part of WarnerMedia“), was best known for their hit animated series RWBY and Gen:Lock. The studio plans to shop the properties and the Roost Podcast Network to other studios.
{IMAGE_8}At the 96th Academy Awards ceremony on Sunday evening, Godzilla Minus One took home the Oscar for Best Visual Effects. This was the Godzilla franchises’ first film to win an Oscar. The Boy and the Heron won the Oscar in the Best Animated Feature category and giving Hayao Miyazaki’s his second career Oscar. As for Barbie, out of the eight Oscar nominations, the movie managed to go home with only one Oscar trophy in the Music (Original Song) category for the song “What Was I Made For?” by Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell.
