Dune: Part Two takes the weekend box office with an epic worthy opening

Dune: Part Two

Dune: Part Two took first place at the weekend box office with $81.5 million. That’s over 10x the second place film. Internationally, the movie did even better with $97 million resulting in a $178.5 million opening weekend.

In contrast, the first Dune opened in 2021 during the pandemic with a little over $41 million. That film also debuted on digital at the same time. It went on to gross $108.9 million domestically, $324.9 million internationally, for a worldwide total of $433.8 million.

While many will say the original’s day and date digital release impacted the opening weekend, it mimics the Spider-Verse films in which the first debuted much lower than the second indicating it build an audience over time. It was also during the pandemic when a different cost analysis was being made by individuals as to what they’d participate in.

Bob Marley: One Love dipped to second place after holding the top spot for two weeks. It grossed $7.4 million to bring its domestic total to $82.8 million. Internationally, the film added $13.9 million to bring that to $63.3 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $146.1 million.

Ordinary Angels held steady in third place with $3.9 million to bring its domestic total to $12.6 million. There’s no international total.

Madame Web held on to fourth place with $3.2 million to lift its domestic total to $40.4 million. Internationally, the film added $8.6 million to bring that to $50.6 million. The movie sits at a little over $91 million after three weeks.

The Chosen: S4 Episodes 7-8 rounded out the top five with $3.2 million. There’s no international total.

In comic film news…

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba – To the Hashira Training dropped to seventh place after debuting in second last week. The film added $2.1 to its total over the weekend to bring its domestic gross to $15.7 million. Internationally, the film has added $7.3 million over the week to bring that to a little over $24 million. Worldwide the movie has grossed $39.7 million.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom added about $400,000 to its domestic total after debuting on HBO over the weekend. Domestically, the film now stands at $124.2 million. Internationally, the film remained at $309.9 million. Worldwide, the movie has grossed $434.1 million.

The week’s overall box office success…

Numbers have 34 films earning $113,090,118 from 33,344 theaters. That’s a boost all on the back of Dune: Part Two from the previous weekend’s $60,530,293 from 38,429 theaters and 70 films. The average earning was $3,391.61 which is over double the previous weekend’s $1,575.
