‘Nice House on the Lake,’ ‘Monstrous,’ ‘Mexikid’ Make ALA Top Ten Lists

The American Library Association has released its lists of the top graphic novels published in late 2022 and throughout 2023, with a top ten and a longer list for three diffrent age categories: adults, teens, and children. The lists are released annually.

The 2023 Best Graphic Novels for Adults Reading List was released by the ALA’s Graphic Novels & Comics Round Table (GNCRT). The top ten titles are

  • Anaïs Nin: A Sea of Lies, by Léonie Bischoff (Fantagraphics)
  • Earthdivers, Vol. 1: Kill Columbus, by Stephen Graham Jones and Davide Gianfelice (IDW)
  • The Human Target, Vols. 1 and 2, by Tom King and Greg Smallwood(DC Comics)
  • Last On His Feet: Jack Johnson and the Battle of the Century, by Adrian Matejka and Youssef Daoudi (Liveright/Norton)
  • Majnun and Layla: Songs from Beyond the Grave, by Yann Damezon (Humanoids)
  • The Nice House on the Lake (Deluxe Edition), by James Tynion IV and Alvaro Martinez Bueno (DC Black Label)
  • Okinawa, by Susumu Higa (Fantagraphics)
  • Roaming, by Jillian Tamaki and Mariko Tamaki (Drawn & Quarterly)
  • Shubeik Lubeik, by Deena Mohamed (Pantheon)
  • The Talk, by Darrin Bell (Henry Holt & Co)

The 2024 Great Graphic Novels for Teens list was compiled by the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA). Their top ten titles are

  • Belle of the Ball, by Mari Costa (First Second)
  • Brooms, by Jasmine Walls and Teo. 2023 (Levine Querido)
  • Family Style: Memories of an American from Vietnam, by Thien Pham (First Second)
  • Insomniacs After School, Vols. 1 and 2, by Makoto Ojiro (VIZ)
  • Mexikid: A Graphic Memoir, by Pedro Martín (Dial Books)
  • Monstrous: A Transracial Adoption Story, by Sarah Myer (First Second)
  • Muhammad Najem, War Reporter: How One Boy Put the Spotlight on Syria, by Muhammad Najem, Nora Neus, and Julie Robine (Little, Brown Ink)
  • The Talk, by Darrin Bell (Henry Holt and Co.)
  • Tiger, Tiger, Vol. 1, by Petra Erika Nordlund (Seven Seas Entertainment)
  • Victory. Stand! Raising My Fist for Justice, by Tommie Smith, Derrick Barnes, and Dawud Anyabwile (Norton Young Readers)

The 2023 Best Graphic Novels for Children List was, like the adult list, a product of the GNCRT. Their top ten are

  • Duel, by Jessixa Bagley and Aaron Bagley (Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers)    
  • A First Time for Everything, by Dan Santat(First Second)
  • Gnome and Rat, by Lauren Stohler (Knopf Books for Young Readers)
  • Mabuhay!, by Zachary Sterling (Graphix)
  • The Magma Cup (Sort of Super #2), by Eric Gapstur (Aladdin)
  • Mexikid, by Pedro Martín (Dial Books for Young Readers)
  • Scurry, by Mac Smith. Art by Mac Smith (Skybound Comet)
  • Tasty: A History of Yummy Experiments, by Victoria Grace Elliott (Random House Graphic)
