Ring in the Year of the Dragon with some fierce Dragon-type Pokémon

Niantic is continuing to announce new events and content for Pokémon GO. Read on below to learn more:

Dragon-type Pokémon run rampant in a weeklong celebration featuring event bonuses, research, and a Global Challenge.

In celebration of the Lunar New Year on February 10, Pokémon GO is all about Dragon-type Pokémon. And there’s even more reason to get excited—the Lunar New Year: Dragons Unleashed event, running February 5, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. to February 11, 2024, at 8:00 p.m. local time, will feature Drampa’s Pokémon GO debut! This friendly Normal- and Dragon-type Pokémon was first discovered in Alola. So keep an eye out for the Placid Pokémon—lucky Trainers might even encounter a Shiny one!

In addition to the Dragon-type Pokémon featured in the event, the event will feature the following bonuses:

  • Increased chance for Lucky Pokémon in trades.
  • Increased chance to become Lucky Friends.
  • Additional Candy for catching Pokémon with Nice Throws, Great Throws, and Excellent Throws.
  • Increased chance for Trainers Level 31 and above to receive Candy XL for catching Pokémon with Nice Throws, Great Throws, and Excellent Throws.

Pokémon that will be unleashed in the wild during the event include Magikarp, Dratini, Shuckle, Fennekin, Skrelp, Noibat, and Jangmo-o. The final Evolutions of several of these Pokémon are powerful contenders in raids or the GO Battle League. For example, Mega Gyarados is considered a solid Dark-type attacker in raids and in the Master League, and Dragonite is popular in both the Ultra League and the Master League. This makes the chance to receive extra Candy and Candy XL as part of the event bonuses especially useful in powering up these Pokémon.

In addition to event-themed Pokémon appearing in the wild, Trainers can complete Field Research tasks to earn encounters with Dratini, Trapinch, Swablu, Gible, Darumaka, Druddigon, Deino, Skrelp, Tyrunt, Goomy, Turtonator, and Drampa.

Dragon-type Pokémon are coming to raids as well as the wild, and you can grab a Raid Pass to battle the following Pokémon:

  • One-Star Raids
    • Dratini
    • Deino
    • Goomy
  • Three-Star Raids
    • Druddigon
    • Turtonator
    • Drampa

Trainers can purchase event-exclusive Timed Research for US$2.00 (or the equivalent pricing tier in your currency). Rewards for completing this research include Stardust, XP, two Lucky Eggs, and encounters with event-themed Pokémon. But don’t forget: Timed Research expires, so be sure to complete your tasks and claim any rewards by February 11, 2024, at 8:00 p.m. local time.

Throughout the event, Trainers from around the world will be tasked with making a collective 1,250,000,000 Nice Throws. If they manage to work together to meet this goal, several bonuses will be unlocked, including the chance to evolve certain Pokémon to get a Pokémon that knows a featured attack, wild encounters with different Dragon-type Pokémon, and the appearance of other Dragon-type Pokémon in raids.

Happy Lunar New Year, Trainers!
