Magma Comix has signed a distribution deal with Diamond Book Distributors for the book channel, and the revived publisher has also announced its first two series, both of which will launch in April 2024. Magma is distributed to the Direct Market by Diamond Comics Distributors.
The first new series from the relaunched publisher is The Principles of Necromancy, a dark fantasy tale by the writing team of Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing (Batman Beyond, Guardians of the Galaxy) and artist Eamon Winkle. Each issue will have a cover by Winkle and a variant cover by Jana Heidersdorf. The first issue will be released on April 3, 2024.
“We talked a lot about the strange figure that a doctor cuts in our own lives – that help you hope you never need – and thought what it might look like to turn that character into an iconic wizard-esque figure in a setting bereft of magic,” the writers said in a statement accompanying the announcement, adding, “It’s our character-oriented horror from One Bad Day: Clayface mixed with the strange sadness and surreal world building from our Guardians of the Galaxy. But this is also a world unlike any we’ve played in before – closer to Conan or Berserk than to our creator-owned pop albums like Joyride.”
Next up is Silicon Bandits, by writer Jason Starr and artist Dalibor Talajić, a futuristic heist story about two unemployed programmers who outsource their crimes to androids. “Like a lot of people, I’m fascinated by artificial intelligence and all of the ethical and legal issues the tech raises, and I felt that telling a crime story with android criminals would be an exciting and compelling way into exploring these themes,” Starr said in a statement accompanying the announcement; he described the new series as “Blade Runner meets Oceans Eleven.” Silicon Bandits will launch on April 10, and every issue will have a main cover by Talajić and a variant by Goran Parlov.
Originally an imprint of Heavy Metal, Magma announced last year that it would relaunch as an independent publisher (see “Magma Comix Returns as Independent Publisher”), with the stated intent of being retailer-friendly with straightforward ordering, returnability, and limited variant covers.
