Catan GmbH will release a new standalone Catan game in 2024, the company announced. Catan – New Energies, planned for Q2, takes the agrarian society of the island’s Viking ancestors into a world in which the citizens need energy, but pollution threatens their home. While the new game is rooted in standard Catan mechanics of harvesting, trading, and building, it also adds power plants, energy tokens, and environmental events as new gameplay elements to incorporate new strategies and stories.
Play begins with fossil fuels that cause pollution events and interrupt resource production. As players invest in renewable energy, they receive rewards. Monitoring and negotiating with fellow players to decrease pollution affects everyone.
There are multiple paths to victory, with the most sustainable player not always the winner, but if pollution levels remain too high and the game ends in catastrophe, the player that has invested the most in renewable energy wins.
In keeping with the game’s theme, the English edition will be printed and assembled in the U.S. using sustainably sourced wood and paper, with no plastics.
The box includes 19 land hexes, 18 number discs, 6 double sided sea frames, 95 resource cards, 20 science cards, 25 development cards, 4 player boards, 2 special victory point tiles, player pieces (16 cities, 20 towns, 48 roads), 4 VP markers, 1 environmental inspector, 20 energy, 1 global footprint marker, 79 event discs, 24 fossil fuel power plants, 36 renewable power plants, 4 warehouse tiles, 1 event disc bag, 10 hazard tokens, 3 player piece boxes, and 2 dice.
The game is for 3-4 players, ages 14 and up, and plays in around 90 minutes. Game art is by Ian O’Toole. MSRP is $69.99, and release is planned for Q2 2024.
