For the first time in recent years, we had mixed reports on the overall direction of RPG sales in our interviews with distributors and retailers, with a slight bias to the downside, for the Summer (May through August) and pre-holiday Fall season. Dungeons & Dragons sales, which appeared to crest late last year and flattened in the spring (see “OGL Mis-Step Shakes Up RPG Business”), have now taken a downward turn for most.
A distributor identified some possible factors influencing D&D sales. “When you talk about D&D, there are multiple factors that could be impacting demand,” the distributor said. “The unfortunate part is they’re all negative, like the OGL bit, even the related Pinkerton bit (which I didn’t really have a problem with but a lot of people did, when they were chasing after that guy that got some of the Magic cards early). They’ve had some hiccups with being politically correct (if people say PC anymore) with some of their releases recently. They’ve announced a new edition. Whenever you say a new edition of a game is coming out, historically, at some point in time, that impacts sales of the current edition.”
