It’s November 15th and our friends from Ilustradoras Unidas are back with the third generation of Pokédex Ilustrada.
Pokémon Blog had the opportunity to speak with Norma (Noroky Ilustrada) Costanza (C.a.cosas/ An Ordinary Frög ), Karen (chibichubi_), and Francisca (sheiklei) about the process behind the creation of this Hoenn-focused art book.
According to the organizers, Hoenn is the most loved region among the artists who participated in this generation of Pokédex Ilustrada.
“It’s the generation we grew up with,” Constanza mentioned.
“From what I have seen, what makes Hoenn so special is the incorporation of new modalities to the game, such as the Pokémon contests, the Pokécubes, and the Dive move,” Norma explained.
Francisca considers Hoenn is also significant because it was the first generation without Team Rocket as the main villains.
For all of them, the most challenging aspect of organizing Pokédex Ilustrada was ensuring that each illustration was completed and delivered on schedule.
“Many of the artists asked us for an extension,” Karen told Pokémon Blog. “It made us anxious if we could make it.”
“The organization itself was quite simple. The method of ordering the Pokémon changed from previous generations, and I think it helped a lot to improve the process,” Francisca added.
Norma and Francisca believe that the most important lesson of this generation was discovering better ways to organize Pokémon and handle deadlines.
Karen considers that they’ve learned a lot from the mistakes and difficulties of the past two generations, but there are still many things they must continue to improve.
“We managed to make improvements to the Pokémon selection system and plan to continue enhancing it,” said Constanza. “Our team has grown stronger, and we have more people on board, which has made the process much easier for us. Now, for the fourth Pokédex, we are fully prepared to go further.”
A total of 142 artists worked on the third generation of Pokédex Ilustrada. They were divided into two groups. 135 artists worked on the design of the Hoenn Pokémon, while the remaining 7 artists contributed to the newest addition of the Pokédex: the postcards.
“The idea of the postcards came up as a way to commemorate the milestones of this region, such as the dive move and the Pokémon contests. So, Constanza organized the ideas of the postcards from important events or elements that stand out in this generation. And we really liked the postcards so much that we want to continue putting them in the next generations,” the team concluded.
