Birds of Prey #2 continues the fun as the plan comes together

Birds of Prey #2

Black Canary has built an all-new team with a very specific and very dangerous first mission: extraction! Their target: [REDACTED]! She’s being held on [REDACTED] and guarded by a battalion of [REDACTED]. Sounds simple enough, right? Well, then we’re explaining it wrong! It’s a terrible mission! And before it can even be launched, the Birds have to gather a few mysterious supplies and see some old familiar faces…that they punch! The team has been assembled, now it’s time to explain the plan and get ready in Birds of Prey #2.

Written by Kelly Thompson, Birds of Prey #2 is a continuation of the fun and craziness of the first issue. Black Canary has her team but now she must go into the details of what they need to do and how they’re going to do it. Except, not all of that is hashed out. Thompson does a fantastic job of really showing off each member’s personality as they attempt to become a team and work together with devising a plan.

Where the comic stands out are those interaction and some of the surprising reactions by the team members. There’s rules for this mission and all of it really changes how you look at this team. Who is on and why is really well thought out and each of their codes and outlook on things is in full display and makes sense. Of course the disfunction is part of the fun of it all.

The art by Leonardo Romero with color by Jordie Bellaire and lettering by Clayton Cowles continues to pop. It just looks fantastic delivering the kinetic vibe that Thompson’s story deserves. The page layout and how each moment is handled visually works so well and enhances it all. Harley going over her questions/concerns is a prime example of that, just kicking up the joke, her personality, and how it gels with the team to another level.

Birds of Prey #2 is a winner of a second issue, continuing the energy and buzz of the debut. It sets things up well with a mix of spy and superheroics with a great dose of humor. Add in great artwork and this is a series that’s fun to sit back and enjoy.
