Viz to Raise Manga Prices in 2024

After 15 years of pricing most of its manga at $9.99 per volume, VIZ Media is raising the MSRP to $11.99 for both new series and new volumes of ongoing series, starting in January 2024, according to listings on e-commerce sites.

A check of prices on the Amazon and Barnes & Noble websites shows volumes of Shonen Jump titles and other series that would typically be priced at $9.99 are listed at $11.99 after January 1.  That’s the case with My Hero Academia, for instance, with Vol. 36 listed at $9.99 in December 2023 and Vol. 37 at $11.99 in March 2024. The price holds for new series as well as new volumes of existing series.

That’s still less than most publishers:  As of now, a standard volume of manga (not an omnibus or special edition) from costs $12.99 for Kodansha Comics titles, $13.00 for Yen Press, and $12.99 to $14.99 from Seven Seas Entertainment.

And VIZ has held the line for 15 years:  In 2009 they increased the price for Shonen Jump and Shojo Beat books, which had been $7.99 and $8.99 respectively, to $9.99, making that the standard price for a typical volume of manga.
