Dave Chisholm, the jazz trumpeter whose graphic biography of Charlie Parker, Chasin’ the Bird, netted him an Eisner Nomination, is taking on the live of another jazz legend, Miles Davis, in a new book coming from Z2 Comics in September 2023.
In Miles Davis and the Search for the Sound, Chisholm uses Davis’s recovery from a 1982 stroke as the framing tale for his story, as the musician, unable to play the trumpet, tries to regain coordination by scribbling and drawing. The story, told largely in Davis’s own words, focuses on his quest to find a particular sound he heard as a child, moving forward from the 1950s through the 1970s as Davis masters his craft and pushes out into new frontiers.
Z2 will publish the graphic novel in several different formats: The standard hardcover, with an MSRP of $39.99; a Deluxe Edition with an oversized version of the hardcover in a slipcase, plus three art prints by Chisholm and a 7” vinyl record of “Miles Runs the Voodoo Down” and “Spanish Key,” with more Chisholm artwork on the jacket. The Gold Edition is the Deluxe Edition with a signed and numbered bookplate by Chisholm and an additional set of postcards (MSRP: $149.99). For the Platinum Edition, priced at $999.99, the graphic novel is signed and sketched by Chisholm, and the package also includes the prints, postcards, and three different variants of the vinyl record.
Chisholm’s Chasin’ the Bird was released in 2020 (see “‘Chasin’ the Bird: Charlie Parker in California’ Ties to Bird 100”).
