Dark Horse Comics has licensed Gou Tanabe’s manga adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s The Shadow Over Innsmouthand will release it as a single 450-page volume. The Shadow Over Innsmouth is a horror novella set in a small Massachusetts town and was first published in 1931; it is part of Lovecraft’s Cthulhu Mythos and follows a student exploring the deserted town and investigating stories about an undersea race called the Deep Ones. The Dark Horse edition, translated by Zack Davisson, will be published as a paperback with 12 color pages and a tip-in title page in silver ink. It will be released in comic shops on November 15, 2023, and in bookstores on November 24, 2023, with an MSRP of $29.99.
Tanabe has adapted a number of Lovecraft stories, including At the Mountains of Madness (see “New Manga Climbs ‘At the Mountain of Madness’”), and another of his adaptations, H. P. Lovecraft’s The Hound and Other Stories, was nominated for a 2018 Eisner Award.
According to the publisher, horror master Junji Ito paid tribute to Tanabe’s adaptations, saying, “I love H.P. Lovecraft…It would be great to adapt him as a serialized manga, but I actually saw Gou Tanabe create a great adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s stories. Afterwards, I ended up not doing it because I thought I wouldn’t be as good as Gou’s version.”
